The 90s were a decade that brought us a plethora of goodness: The Spice Girls, Beanie Babies, slap bracelets, Dunkaroos, Full House, tearaway pants and, arguably most importantly, Aaron Carter. As a product of these SunnyD fueled times, I had the luxury of growing up during the height of 90s design, which was reflected in the sophisticated aesthetic of my pre-teen bedroom. From inflatable furniture to fuzzy-framed pictures, here’s a serious guide on how to model your crash pad like you’re back in the 90s.

Blow-Up Furniture

No 90s room would be complete without an inflatable sofa or armchair. If you’re really looking to *~jazz things up~*, a clear piece of furniture with feathers inside adds a level of class that can’t be found through conventional couches. Just make sure to check your friend’s pockets before they sit down; sharp objects are plastic’s worst nightmare!!!!!

Posters!!!!!

Who ever thought decorating with “art” was a better idea than plastering posters of your favourite bands’ faces all over your walls? Clearly this person never had an autographed (or limited edition) Backstreet Boys poster where Nick’s dreamy stare watched you as you slept. #AsLongAsYouLoveMe.

Glow-In-The-Dark Stars

Buy them: here

Who can forget the amazing (and varying in sizes) glow-in-the-dark-stick-on-with-tack-that-never-comes-off, stars? Covering your ceiling in these bad boys makes every night feel like a magical camping sesh out in the wilderness. If the 90s taught us anything, it’s that everything is better when it glows in the dark. Including Nick Carter.

~BFF POWER~

Your 90s themed bedroom should double as a shrine to you and your BFF. The more photos of you two shopping/eating/laughing/prank calling boys– the better. Went to the mall and spent all your toonies in the photo booth? Frame that shiz! Got a homemade birthday card from your no. 1 gal? Put it on your corkboard! Memories need to be documented.

Lighting

The right lighting is essential to setting a serious 90s mood. Lava lamps not only have a ~calming~ effect, but they radiate a mellow glow that regular volt bulbs just don’t. Fiber optic lights provide the right amount of illumination, without the harshness of desk lamps. Christmas lights also make great year-round decor, especially if you hang them around your bedpost. WHO CAN PICK JUST ONE?!?!

Pattern and Colour

Your bedroom should not be short of loud and clashing colour. Patterns are also key; the more obnoxious the design – the better. To gauge how successful your colour scheme is, time how long it takes for your parents to get a headache after walking in your room. Less than a minute and you’ve got a promising interior design career ahead of you!

Now you’ve successfully transported your room back to the 90s. Bye.
